If you encountered a victim of human trafficking, would you know? Anyone in your neighborhood, congregation or community can be a victim of sex or labor trafficking. Victims may be restricted from leaving their location, or may not be receiving fair pay for their work. Look beneath the surface. In support of Human Trafficking Awareness Month and Human Trafficking Awareness Day on January 11, the Florida Department of Health is highlighting the important role that health care providers play in identifying and helping victims of human trafficking, many of whom are minors. It is estimated that more than 20 million men, women and children around the world are victims of human trafficking. Statistics rank Florida as the third highest trafficking destination in the country, with half of all trafficking victims under the age of 18.

What is Human Trafficking? Human Trafficking is the recruitment, harboring, transporting, providing or obtaining, by any means, a person for labor or services involving forced labor, slavery or servitude in any industry, such as forced or coerced participation in agriculture, prostitution, manufacturing, or other industries or in domestic service or marriage (Freedom Network, based on the federal criminal law definitions of trafficking).
