Monroe County, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County (DOH-Monroe), in partnership with the Miami Victim Assistance Program Team and the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), hosted a free Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention Training on January 12 at the Monroe County Public Library in Key West.

Held in recognition of National Human Trafficking Prevention Month and Wear Blue Day, the training brought together community members, service providers, and local partners to strengthen awareness and prevention efforts across Monroe County. Participants learned how to recognize signs of human trafficking, respond safely when concerns arise, and connect victims with available resources.

This session featured expert-led presentations from the Miami Victim Assistance Program Team with Homeland Security Investigations and Janelle Filsaime, MPA, Regional Human Trafficking Prevention Coordinator with DCF. Attendees described the training as informative, engaging, and highly relevant to the community.

“We are grateful for the strong turnout and the collaboration that made this training possible,” said Ivona Coleman, community health improvement manager[GS1]  for DOH-Monroe. “Community awareness is one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent human trafficking and support survivors.”

Following the training, participants gathered for a group photo wearing blue to show solidarity with victims and raise awareness.

This event supports DOH-Monroe’s Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) and reflects ongoing collaboration among public health, victim advocacy, and community partners dedicated to protecting vulnerable individuals in the Florida Keys.
