Monroe County, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County (DOH-Monroe) hosted two bicycle helmet fitter trainings on September 19, 2025, at the Marathon Library and September 22, 2025, at the Gato Building in Key West. The sessions were led by Regional Helmet Fitter Trainer and Director of Community Health Alison Kerr, DOH-Monroe, and co-taught by Community Health Improvement Manager Ivona Coleman, DOH-Monroe.

A total of 26 participants completed the training, representing agencies across the county including the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Key Colony Beach Police Department, Monroe County School District Head Start, and others.

These community partners are now equipped to properly fit helmets, helping increase bicycle safety for residents and visitors throughout the Florida Keys. By ensuring more riders wear properly fitted helmets, this initiative aims to reduce head and brain injuries in a county with one of the highest rates of bicycling activity.

For more information or to be fitted for a free bike helmet (while supplies last), please contact DOHMonroe@flhealth.gov or visit monroe.flhealth.gov/bikesafety.
