National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) is observed each year on February 7 to raise awareness about the impact of HIV on the Black community in the United States.

  • CDC estimates that, as of 2019, about 1.2 million people in the U.S. have HIV.
  • In 2019, Black people accounted for 13% of the U.S. population but 40% (479,300) of people living with HIV in the U.S.
  • Most new HIV diagnoses were among Black men thru male to male sexual contact (79%) and heterosexual contact (14%) and for Black women 91% of the diagnoses were thru heterosexual contact.

The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County (DOH-Monroe) and Community Health of South Florida (CHI) are collaborating to host a community HIV/AIDS education event at CHI, 727 Fort Street, Key West, FL, 33040, on Feb. 7, 2023, from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Attendees at the Feb. 7 community health event will be offered free healthcare screenings, free HIV Testing, free condoms, and education on the HIV prevention tools. Linkage to mental health Services will also be available. Gift cards will be given to attendees.

HIV/AIDS prevention here in the Florida Keys is a top priority for DOH-Monroe.
