Sanitary Nuisances

Florida Department of Health in Monroe County

A sanitary nuisance is a condition by which people's health or lives may be threatened or impaired or through which a disease may be caused or transmitted, either directly or indirectly. Some examples of sanitary nuisances include improperly treated human or animal waste, defective septic tanks, unsanitary garbage storage or other conditions that harbor flies, mosquitoes or other insects capable of disease transmission. Investigations of sanitary nuisances are usually triggered by a complaint called in to the department. Upon receipt of a complaint, the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County investigates its validity and, if valid, serves notice that it must be removed or abated.
