All staff members of the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County have been trained in emergency management procedures and assigned roles in the Incident Command Structure in the event of any natural or manmade emergency or disaster impacting the Florida Keys. As a hurricane approaches the Florida Keys, for example, staff members evacuate to Miami to set up a shelter for Monroe County residents who are enrolled in the Special Needs Registry program run through Monroe County Social Services. Individuals are eligible for the program and evacuation to the special needs shelter if they are 60 year of age or older, frail, elderly, medically needy and/or disabled and are not served in or by a residential facility program.
