Bicycle safety is an important public health issue in the Florida Keys.  A larger proportion of Monroe County’s population bikes to work than any other county in the state of Florida and research shows that Monroe County has the highest fatality rate, the highest ER visit rate, and the 3rd highest hospitalization rate in the state for bicycle accidents with motor vehicles.  The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County is hosting a bike helmet fitter training and certification course at the Gato Building (1100 Simonton Street, Key West) on Friday September 28 from 10am to 12pm.  This free two-hour course is offered to all organizational representatives in Monroe County interested in promoting bike safety and injury prevention.  Certified helmet fitters are eligible to receive free bike helmets and other bike safety materials for distribution to the community from the Florida Pedbike Resource Center, funded by the Florida Department of Transportation.  For more information or to register, contact Alison Kerr at 305-676-3820 or Alison.Kerr@flhealth.gov.
